Anufriev Efim Evseevich (1897-1970) – a party worker, an active participant in the establishment of Soviet power, a participant in the civil war. Born in the village of Gam. In June 1918, he was admitted to the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks at the Stella Polare sawmill. In 1920-1928, he was the secretary of the Pechora and Izhma Pechora district committee of the party. In 1928-1930, he was the chairman of the North Committee under the Komi regional executive committee. In 1934-1957, he worked in leading economic posts for the supply of the Urals factories. He was the deputy of the 9th All-Russian Congress of Soviets. Source.

Arteev Grigory Mitrofanovich (30.11.1907-26.02.1972) – a party and public figure. Born in the village of Varysh. Member of the CPSU since 1931. In 1930, he graduated from the Komi Regional Soviet Communist Party School, in 1945 from the Higher School of Party Organizers under the Central Committee of the CPSU. From 1930, he worked as a propagandist, an instructor, the head of the department of the Ust-Kulom and Izhma district committees of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks, the 1st secretary of the Sysola and Storozhevsk district party committees. From 1939, he worked in the apparatus of the regional committee of the CPSU. Since 1948, he worked as the chairman of the regional trade union council, since 1958 in leadership positions in the Komi Economic Council. Since 1961, he was a personal pensioner of federal significance. The deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 2nd and 3rd convocations, the deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Komi ASSR (since 1947), a member of the regional committee of the CPSU (1940-1960), a member of the bureau of the regional party committee (1948-1958). He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree (1946) and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1957). Source.

Bratenkov Nikolai Terentyevich (27.12.1949) – a public and political figure. Born in Izhma. From 1971, he worked as a physics teacher and as the head teacher for extracurricular activities. In 1977-1983, he worked as the director of the Kipievo secondary school. He was an instructor and the head of a department of the Izhma District Committee of the CPSU, the chairman of the District Committee for Nature Protection. He was elected a deputy of the District Council, of the Supreme Council of the Republic (1990-1995), of the State Council of the Komi Republic (1995-1999, 2020-2025). He held the posts of the head of the administration of Izhemsky district (1993-1999), the head of the Izhma road repair and construction department (1999-2003), the head of the administration of Izhemsky district (2003-2007). He has the title of “Honored Worker of the Komi Republic”. An active social activist, the coordinator of the Save the Pechora Committee in Izhemsky district, a member of the Presidium of the interregional public movement Izvatas. Source.

Vityazev Vasily Arkhipovich (1910-1984) – a statesman. Born in the village of Mokhcha. In 1928, he was accepted at the Syktyvkar Pedagogical College. In 1932, he received a degree in sociology. He headed the Pomozdino and Gam schools of collective farm youth, was in charge of the boards of education in Ust-Kulom and Troitsko-Pechorsk. In 1939, he was admitted to the ranks of the CPSU and promoted to party work. A participant of the Great Patriotic War. After demobilization, he worked in the regional party committee. He was accepted at the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the CPSU in Moscow. In 1952, he headed the department of administrative, trade and financial bodies of the regional party committee in Syktyvkar. He was the head of the Ministry of Social Security of the Komi ASSR. Rochev Ivan Alekseevich (22.10.1906-24.08.1980) – the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Komi ASSR (1945-1949). Born in the village of Bakur. He was the editor of the newspaper Vestnik Pechory and the 1st secretary of two regional committees of the CPSU in the Komi ASSR. Until October 1941, he was the 1st secretary of the Pechora district committee of the CPSU. In 1943-1944, he served as the Deputy Secretary of the Komi Regional Committee of the All-Union Communist Party on animal husbandry. From 1945 to June 1949, he was the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Komi ASSR, and in 1949-1950, he was the 2nd Secretary of the Komi Regional Committee of the CPSU. In 1950-1953, he studied at the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the CPSU. In 1953-1955, he served as the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Komi ASSR; from April 1955 to March 1959 as the Minister of Social Security of the Komi ASSR. The Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR (1947-1951) and of the Supreme Soviet of the Komi ASSR (1938-1959). He was awarded the Order of Lenin (1946) and the Order of the Badge of Honor (1942). Anufrieva Valentina Ivanovna (08.04.1948) – a public figure, the former chairman of the board of Izvatas. A native of the village of Ust-Voya, Vuktyl district. In 1968, she graduated from the Naryan-Mar Pedagogical College, in 1972 from the Komi Pedagogical Institute. She worked in schools of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, as a pioneer leader in the Brykalansk school, as a secretary of the Izhma district committee of the Komsomol for schools, as an instructor of the Komi Regional Committee of the Komsomol, and as an employee of the organizational department of the Council of Ministers of the Komi ASSR. In 1990, she headed the Syktyvkar representative office of the Izhma Komi, which was soon transformed into the Izvatas department. At the 5th congress of the Izvatas in 2003, she was elected the chairman of the council. Thanks to her activities, in many regions where the Izhma Komi live, the subdivisions of Izvatas have been created. Anufrieva’s public activities have included attempts to get the Izhma Komi recognition as indigenous small-numbered peoples, preservation of the Komi language and identity, and helping the Izvatas to obtain higher education. Thanks to her, the Year of the Creative Person was established in the Izhemsky district. Anufrieva was awarded a medal from the Association of the Peoples of the North “For loyalty to the North”, a badge of distinction “For services to the Komi Republic”, and the title “Honorary Chairman of the Council of Izvatas”. Balin Dmitry Ivanovich (1796-1865) – a Komi peasant, an active participant in the protests of Komi peasants. He was imprisoned many times. Balin played an important role in the unrest of the Izhma peasants in 1836-1838. Source.

Degtyareva Nina Stepanovna (27.10.1943) – a teacher, a trade union, party, and administrative worker, a public figure. A local historian, a professional tourist, a developer of hiking routes, one of the first mentors of a group of Izhma schoolchildren that took part in a trip to the Subpolar Urals. The chairman of the interregional public movement Izvatas (1993-1996). With the direct and active participation of Degtyareva, the Lud festival was created, the Izhma museum was equipped. The first winner of the Patriot of Russia medal in the Izhemsky district. Source.

Rochev Nikolay Vasilievich (05.12.1962-31.08.2018) – a teacher, an organizer of tourism and local history work, a public figure. Born in the village of Brykalansk. A graduate of the natural-geographical faculty of the Komi State Pedagogical Institute. He worked as a teacher and a headteacher of the Gam school. The deputy of the district council of several convocations. In 2004-2005, he was the deputy chairman of the district council; in 2005-2007, he was the first deputy head of the municipality administration. From 2010 to his death, he served as the head of the interregional public movement Izvatas. In 2016-2018, he was the director of the Izhma regional children’s center. Source.
Semyashkin Ivan Afanasevich (23.12.1883-09.02.1947) – a party and public figure. A native of the Krasnobor volost of Pechorsky district of the Arkhangelsk province. Aleksyuk Vladimir Nikolaevich (02.01.1939-05.09.2018) – a mathematician, the Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, professor, the Head of the department of mathematical analysis at the Komi State Pedagogical Institute. Born in the village of Shchelyayur. The main topics of scientific works: measure theory, foundations of set theory. Source.
Babushkin Alexander Ivanovich (25.09.1904-12.08.1962) – an economist. Born in the village of Bakur. In 1925-1937, he worked in the Komi regional planning commission as the head of the national economy section and deputy chairman of the regional plan. He made a great contribution to the development of the concept of economic development and the preparation of five-year plans for the development of the national economy of the Komi Autonomous oblast. The author of scientific works on the problems of the economy of the Komi Autonomous oblast and the Bolshezemelskaya tundra. Repressed in 1937. Rehabilitated in 1955. Source.

Igushev Evgeny Alexandrovich (11.03.1939) – a linguist, the Doctor of Philological Sciences, professor. Born in the village of Pozhnya. Since 1973, he has been working at Syktyvkar State University. In 1991, at the University of Tartu he defended his doctoral dissertation on the stylistics of the morphological categories of the Komi language. He taught at the Uppsala University (Sweden). The member of the International Society of Hungarologists (Budapest), the foreign member of the Finno-Ugric Society (Helsinki). Source.
Istomin Mikhail Fedorovich (01.11.1821-07.12.1862) – a historian, an ethnographer, a linguist, a folklorist, a poet, the editor of Arkhangelskiye gubernskiye vedomosti (Arkhangelsk Provincial Gazette), the author of about 30 articles about the Komi language and theater. Born in Izhma. He spoke several languages: Komi, Russian, Latin, Greek, French. The author of the first publication of the plot of the legend Yagmort in 1848. Source, source.

Kazanovsky Evgeny Stepanovich (18.02.1938-02.05.2026) – the Doctor of Veterinary Sciences. A native of the village of Peschanka, Pechorsky district, Komi ASSR. In 1970, he defended his PhD thesis “Study of the toxicity of ruelen and bitex for reindeer”. He took part in the work on finding funds and developing methods for combating reindeer gadfly diseases. Over the years of his work he published over 60 scientific articles on veterinary medicine. In 1990, he defended his doctoral dissertation “Veterinary and sanitary substantiation of the use of organophosphorus insecticides in reindeer husbandry, their toxicity for reindeer and their effectiveness in edemagenosis.” Awarded with a bronze medal of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements, the gratitude of the State Commission on Chemicals for the Control of Pests, Plant Diseases and Weeds under the Ministry of Agriculture of the USSR, the Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Komi ASSR, the Certificates of Honor of the Central Committee of the CPSU of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions and the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League, the Certificates of Honor of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and the Russian Agricultural Academy, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Komi Republic, as well as the North-Eastern Scientific and Methodological Center and the Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture of the Komi Republic. Kanev Viktor Fedorovich (15.03.1939-10.09.2008) – a scientist, a teacher, the Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, professor, the Academician of the International Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, the Honored Worker of the Higher School of the Russian Federation, the member of the Union of Masters of Traditional Crafts of the Komi Republic, the Head of the Scientific Council of the Komi Crafts Chamber. Born in the village of Karataika, the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. In 1964-1967, he worked as a teacher in the village of Oksino in the NAO, then as a teacher and director in the village of Krasny Yag and Kozhva of the Pechorsky district. Kanev Geniy Vasilyevich (06.01.1937-06.04.1992) – an economist, the Doctor of Economics, the Honored Scientist of the Komi ASSR. Born in the village of Brykalansk. He defended his Ph.D. thesis on the topic “Ways to improve the profitability of state farm production”, the Doctoral thesis on the topic “Economic problems of agriculture in the Northern Economic Region.” In 1992, he was appointed the director of the Institute of Economic and Social Problems of the North of the Komi Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Kuznetsova Tatyana Leonidovna (10.05.1959) – a literary scholar, the Candidate of Philological Sciences, the Head of the literary studies sector of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Komi Scientific Center. Born in the village of Moshyuga. A member of the editorial board of the scientific journal Nasledie (Heritage) (Syktyvkar), a member of the expert commission of the Russian Humanities Foundation, a member of the jury of the literary competition Ezys bord among the authors of the Republic’s literary and art magazine Voyvyv Kodzuv. Rochev Nikolai Nikitich (22.05.1922-02.09.2004) – the Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR, the Honored Worker of the National Economy of the Komi ASSR, the Candidate of Historical Sciences. Born in the village of Brykalansk. The initiator of creation of and the first director of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of Komi at the branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1970-1985). Supervised the preparation and holding of the VI International Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples. He was awarded two Orders of the Great Patriotic War, the Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Red Star, the Polish Order of the Silver Cross of Merit, the medals For Victory over Germany, For the Defense of Stalingrad, and the Czechoslovak medal For Bravery Before the Enemy. Rochev Petr Andreevich (18.10.1913-08.06.1991) – a Soviet scientist, the Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, the Corresponding Member of the All-Union Agricultural Academy. Born in the village of Mokhcha. He was a member of the Commission on the Problems of the North of the Presidium of the All-Union Agricultural Academy. A prominent scientist in the field of dairy farming of the Pechora North. He worked as a researcher at the Northern Regional Experimental Station for animal husbandry. Director of the Pechora Agricultural Experimental Station of the People’s Commissariat for Land of the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (1935-1942). A participant of the Great Patriotic War. The director of the Naryan-Mar Agricultural Experimental Station of the Research Institute of Agriculture of the Far North (1946-1988). The Honored Zootechnician of the RSFSR and the USSR. Rochev Yuri Gerasimovich (07.03.1936-29.10.1995) – a scientist, a folklorist, a literary critic, the Candidate of Philological Sciences. Born in the village of Muzhi in Shuryshkarsky district. Participated in writing the three-volume collection Komi folk songs (1966, 1968, 1971), three volumes of the History of Komi literature (1980). Together with V. I. Lytkin prepared I. A. Smetanin Alexander Fransovich (24.04.1949-06.12.2010) – the Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor. Born in the village of Kelchiyur. Since 1994, he served as the Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Komi Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and, at the same time, since 1996, as the Director of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Komi Scientific Center. Awarded with a high government award, the Order of Friendship. The Honored Worker of the Komi Republic. Twice laureate of the Government of the Republic’s Prize. Anufriev Alexander Zakharovich (12.09.1923-04.05.2002) – a journalist, an editor, a party worker. Born in the village of Mokhcha. He was a correspondent for the newspaper Za novyj sever (For the New North). The head of the department of the newspaper Krasnoye znamya (Red Banner). In 1966-1971, he was the chief editor of the newspaper Krasnoye znamya. In 1974-1986, he was an instructor of the Komi Regional Committee of the CPSU. Arteev Sergey Alexandrovich (22.07.1935 – 03.01.2003) – a cultural worker, a composer, a poet. Born in the village of Varysh. He wrote the songs Izhma, my joy, Miss Olympics in honor of R. P. Smetanina, Izhma Shawl. Source.
Valeev Grigory Nikiforovich (Gora Grisha) (1878-1980) – a famous Komi storyteller, the Kolva Yaran. He did not speak either Russian or Nenets. Born in Bolshezemelskaya tundra. The performer of the works of the Izhma Kolva epos, he preferred a song form of performance with prosaic commentary on individual episodes. Vokuev Fyodor Petrovich (01.01.1950-21.10.2000) – a poet, a composer. Born in the village of Kelchiyur. A graduate of the Naryan-Mar Pedagogical School, the Leningrad Electromechanical Institute of Communications. He worked as a music worker in the Ust-Izhma school, in the kindergartens of Kelchiyur and Maloye Galovo kindergartens. The author of over 20 children’s songs, children’s musical fairy tales, several songs for adults. Author of the collection Tilgo lov pytshkyn … (2000). Founder of the first folklore group in the village of Kelchiyur, which received recognition throughout Izhemsky district. Source, source.

Rochev Vasily Prokopyevich (28.06.1952) – the People’s Artist of the Komi Republic. Born in the village of Nyashabozh. A graduate of the vocal department of the Syktyvkar Musical College, he sang in the state ensemble Asya kya, in the republican musical theater, worked in the Komi Philharmonic. In 1995, he created his own ensemble Meli shiyas (Favorite melodies). Over the years of its existence, the ensemble has compiled 25 concert programs with performances in the villages and cities of the Komi Republic, in Moscow, Finland, Germany. The Honored Worker of the Komi Republic. For many years Rochev headed the Center of Folk Culture of the Izvatas in Syktyvkar. The cultural and leisure institution has its own song ensemble Izhma, created by the director of the Center. Source.

Savenko Olga Nikolaevna (11.09.1956) – a TV journalist, the head of the thematic broadcasting service of the State TV and Radio Company “Komi Gor”. A native of Ust-Lyzha in Pechorsky district. The laureate of the State Prize of the Komi Republic for the creation of a series of films about the national and cultural traditions of the Komi people and the State Prize of the Government of the Komi Republic for the creation of a series of television programs “The Finno-Ugric World”, the laureate of all-Russian and international television festivals and competitions. Anufrieva Albina Zinovievna (22.03.1940-23.02.1996) – a writer, the collector of Izhma folklore. Born in the village of Porozhsk in Ukhtinsky district. Vtyurina Lyudmila Zarnievna (Zarni Lusja) (11.01.1964) – a poet, the member of the Union of Writers of Russia. A native of Kelchiyur. A graduate of the Perm State Institute of Culture, an employee of the National Children’s Library of the Komi Republic named after S. Marshak. She has been publishing since 2001. The author of the collections Shonyd diyas (Warm Islands), Maybyr kad (Happy Time), Kyvburyas (Poems), Tovsya oshkamoshka (Winter Rainbow), Olemly oda (Ode to life). The laureate of the State Prize of the Government of the Komi Republic in the field of culture and art. The Honored Worker of the Komi Republic (2015), the winner of special prizes of the republican competition Ezys bord (Silver Wing). Nikulin Nikolay Egorovich (29.04.1932-1993) – a doctor, a children’s writer. Born in the village of Votcha of the Sysolsky district. Popov Vladimir Alexandrovich (V. Sanin) (01.01.1934-07.02.1995) – a poet, a translator, the member of the Union of Writers of the USSR. Born in Izhma. He worked in the Komi republican radio, the Komi book publishing house, was the editor-in-chief of the Voyvyv Kodzuv magazine. His most famous works are the poem Sylisny babayas, sylisny, Pedor Kiron, Mamolon yugydys and others. The winner of the Komi Komsomol Prize, the Honored Worker of Culture of the Komi ASSR. Potashev Alexander Borisovich (19.05.1971-17.02.2013) – a poet. Born in Naryan-Mar, spent his childhood in the village of Ust-Izhma, studied at the Shchelyayur secondary school. In 1996, he initiated the publication of a collection of works of the Izhma poets The wax wings. His works were published in the regional newspaper Novy Sever, in Literaturnaya Rossiya, in the almanac Bely Bor, in the literary collection The Izhma Character. Rochev Egor Vasilievich (07.05.1937-09.10.2012) – a writer, the member of the Union of Writers of the USSR. Born in Bolshezemelskaya tundra, graduated from the school in the village of Ust-Usa. Was the editor-in-chief of the magazine Voyvyv Kodzuv. His most famous works are Loz tundra, Mitruk peto tundrays, Menurei, Morttuy and others. Source, source, source.

Rochev Yakov Mitrofanovich (Mitruk Yak) (23.01.1909-03.09.1977) – a writer, a translator, the member of the Union of Writers of the USSR. Born in the village of Ust-Ukhta. He worked as a teacher, a regional education authority’s inspector, a correspondent for the newspaper Gord Pechera, and as the editor of the Komi book publishing house, as the executive editor of the magazine Voyvyv kodzuv. Chuprov Yakov Ivanovich (Bia Ӧgyr) (03.06.1906-04.1942) – a poet, a journalist, a public figure. Born in the village of Bakur. He was the editor of the newspaper Gord Pechera. His most famous works are the poem Konjor nyvlon sylom, Saljo Mikulai (Yaranyaslon moyd) and others. Source, source, source.

Arteev Nikolai Lukich (1901-12.11.1931) – one of the first Izhma doctors, Komsomol and economic leader. Born in Izhma. After the end of the civil war, he worked in Komsomol as the organizer of the first Komsomol cells in the Izhmo-Pechora Krai, the first secretary of the Izhmo-Pechora Ukom, a member of the Regional Komsomol Committee. In 1925-1930, he was a student of the medical faculty of the 1st Moscow State University. During his studies, he did an internship as the head of the Izhemsky district health department, a surgeon at the Mokhcha and Syktyvkar hospitals, a lecturer on sanitary and hygienic topics at the regional courses. After graduation, Arteev worked as the head and practicing surgeon at the Ust-Usinsk hospital, performed dozens of brilliant operations without a single fatal outcome. He enjoyed great prestige as a medical specialist and as a citizen. In November 1931, during a typhus epidemic, Arteev was infected and died. A hospital in the village of Ust-Usa is named after Arteev. Source.

Bryushinin Ivan Pavlovich (1892* -1941) – legendary universal doctor. Born in the village of Yurala of the Pinezhsky district, Arkhangelsk oblast. In 1910, he graduated from a medical school, for five years he worked as a medical assistant in Karelia. During the First World War, he served as a medical assistant and had military awards. In 1917, he graduated from the medical faculty of the 2nd Moscow University, and was sent to work in the Izhmo-Pechora district, was appointed head of the district department of health and surgery. Bryushinin made a lot of efforts to strengthen the material base of the district hospital. At his urgent request in 1934, the hospital acquired the first X-ray machine in the Pechora Krai. He did a lot to train nursing staff. The radius of the hospital’s service was enormous, from the lower reaches of the Pechora to the banks of the Ob, during wintertime hundreds of carts and reindeer teams gathered around the hospital. Ivan Pavlovich worked at the Pechora River Basin for 14 years, of which 10 in Izhemsky district. For his time, he was a unique doctor – surgeon, ophthalmologist, gynecologist. In 1978, he became the absolute champion of Russia among youth. The absolute champion of the 4th Winter Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR among juniors. Smetanina Raisa Petrovna (29.02.1952) – a skier, 4-time Olympic champion, 7-time world champion, the multiple champion of the USSR, the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR. Born in the village of Mokhcha. One of the most successful racers in the history of skiing. For a long time, she remained the female athlete with the greatest number of Winter Olympic awards (10). The first athlete (both among women and men) who managed to win medals at 5 Winter Olympics in a row. The center of skiing in Syktyvkar is named after Raisa Smetanina. She was awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of Friendship of Peoples, the Badge of Honor. Vokueva Zinaida Pavlovna (10.02.1947) – an entrepreneur, a tourism organizer. A native of Inta. Agronomist by profession, worked as a field cultivation foreman at the Izhemsky state farm. From 1986 to 1988, she was the chief agronomist of the state farm. In 1988, she took courses in Yoshkar-Ola at a fur-coat factory on the technology of sewing, dressing fur and skins, and later headed the state farm workshop for sewing fur and leather products. In November 2005, she registered as a private entrepreneur and organized an ethnic tourism base with the flavor of local life for active recreation for children and adults in Bazui in the village of Sizyabsk. Terentyev Oleg Mikhailovich (16.01.1961) – a businessman. Born in the village Krasnobor. Graduated from the Leningrad Agricultural Institute and the Russian Academy of Managers. He worked at the Krasnoborsky state farm (held positions from engineer to director), worked as chief engineer of the Izhemsky regional agro-industrial association. One of the organizers of the joint stock company Izva. Since 1995, he was the General Director of JSC Izva; since 1999, he has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC Izva. Has the title “Honored Worker of the Komi Republic”, the deputy of the State Council of the Komi Republic in 1995-1999. Source.

Batmanov Vasily Fotievich (1891-30.11.1918) – one of the active participants of the establishment of Soviet power in the Komi Krai. Born in the village of Mokhcha. Participated in the First World War. Upon returning home in 1918, he was actively involved in the revolutionary struggle. Was elected as the chairman of the county executive committee of the Soviets. Filippov Vasily Ionikievich (01.01.1924-07.01.1988) – the Soviet military leader, lieutenant general. Born in Izhma. He was a military adviser in Cuba and Yemen, a deputy chief military adviser in Afghanistan. He fought on the Donskoy, Steppe, 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian fronts. He took part in the liberation of Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia. Killed in Hungary.
